As Eckhart Tolle often reminds us, words are like a sign-post…pointing beyond itself to some greater truth or knowing.
When you try to get a dog to look at something, you may point at it. The dog doesn’t know to look at where you are pointing; rather, he misses the point by keeping his eyes fixed on your finger. Getting stuck on the level of words is the same. Don’t just look at the words, look to where the words point.
The mind likes to parse words. If the ego’s goal is to be right or better that other egos, then words can be a great tool. But, like everything in the realm of form, words are not the truth. At best, words can only point to a deeper truth or knowing.
When we drop ego, we transcend words. We then begin to understand that there are many words that mean the same thing. This enables us to let go of bias and conditioning and allows true understanding beyond words. We continue tomorrow and each day after that.
