A core human need is to be admired, loved and respected. Thus, we seek approval and grasp at what cannot be possessed.
This drive toward socially-acceptable normalcy is the drive to become false and to bury the truths of the soul. Thus we are conditioned, trained, controlled, domesticated by nothing more than a few occasional words of approval. Behind the cheap praise there is no love and no respect.
Set yourself free from the social norms, the expectations, the ways of the world you were taught. There is nothing you can do to be truly loved, admired, or respected. But there is something you can be: yourself.
When you are content to be simply yourself, and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you. Tao Te Ching: A New English Version, 8
